• Piauí is a region of Brazil that is on a fast course of rapid development and improvement. Because it has been recognised for its potential as an international tourist destination, each year brings new foreign investors. The national government also realized the economic opportunities and in 2007, it began to underwrite and fund projects, and thus far has committed a vast amount of financial funding to the state.

    Government money has funded continued improvements on the infrastructure, such as airports, roads, highways and bridges including R45.4 billion on a new railway which will create 1,000 new jobs in the Piaui region.  The Government has also invested heavily in tourism and education.

    31/10/2007: R$ 49 million
    The Brazilian Ministry of Tourism provided R$ 49 million to the State of Piauí for the construction of infrastructure, tourism, transport and education.

    07/01/2008: R$ 37 million
    The Brazilian government invested R$ 37 million for coastal infrastructure improvements in the region. R$ 22 million went to sanitation projects, including the construction of the Coastal Aqueduct benefitting the towns of Parnaíba, Luis Correia da Praia and Cashew.

    In addition, R$ 15 million was slated for structural improvements in the region of Luis Correia.

    26/08/2008: R$ 20.6 million
    A Parnaíba Airport expansion project is currently underway to accommodate international flights. The airport expansion began on 26/08/08 and completion is expected in 2010. Invested thus far is R$ 20.6 million. Improvements include runway extensions, drainage system reconstruction, and a new system of marking lights that will guide incoming large passenger aircraft arriving from Europe and the United States.

  • 02/09/2009: R$ 26.2 million
    In two short years, Piauí was the sole beneficiary of the largest infrastructure investments in state history. Just last year, the State Government invested $ 26.2 million to pave 500 kilometres of new asphalt roads, which now makes travel between cities and the beautiful beaches possible.

    18/10/2008: New Infrastructure Inauguration
    The Governor of Piauí held an official inauguration of new roads connecting two state highways in the coastal region, which allows tourists easy access between the pristine beaches of Piauí. This project was a joint collaboration between the federal government and the the Ministry of Tourism.

    12/02/2009: R$ 5.4 billion
    The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, announced that construction of a new 420 kilometre stretch of railway will begin in May, 2010. The railway will connect the cities of Trinidad (PE) and Eliseu Martins and will then connect Piauí in June 2010. The government has budgeted $ 5.4 billion for this project, which is expected to create 1,000 new jobs in the Piauí region.

  • 12/02/2009: R$ 108 million
    The Governor of Piauí officially opened Piaui’s first wind farm in December. The project began in August 2008 with a Federal Government investment of R$ 108 million. Sited on 540 hectares in Praia Pedra do Sal, the wind farm is part of the Incentive Program for Alternative Sources (Proinfa), which guarantees that energy produced on site will be purchased for a minimum period of 20 years.
